Curriculum
A Quality American Education for Young Pioneers
XCL American Academy provides students with the opportunity to learn within a unique learning environment, underpinned by American values and a personal character development program that provides full immersion in a proven curriculum that prepares them to become agents of their own success.
There is an emphasis on the development of academic, social and practical skills necessary to enter schools, colleges, universities and beyond, whether in the United States or anywhere else around the world.
Best of breed learning
We have carefully selected only the very best curriculum programs that have been tried and tested in the United States and worldwide. In addition to closely following the rigorous AERO Curriculum guidelines and the Common Core standards issued by the United States Department of Education, we also adopt internationally recognized curriculum programs such as the University of Chicago Everyday Math, Inspired Science and a balanced approach to literacy with materials from Scholastic.
Rigorous standards-based curriculum
XAA offers a rigorous and balanced American curriculum in Singapore that is directly aligned with the AERO and the US Common Core standards, allowing easy transition to any other similar American curriculum school globally. Starting from Grade 1, student progress is measured twice a year using the US Common Core MAP testing system. This assessment provides teachers with the information needed to ensure your children are reaching their academic goals.
The XCL American Academy curriculum is a standards-based platform that allows students to demonstrate skills and knowledge obtained at each age and stage, and provides the opportunity for each individual to experience authentic, practical, real-life lessons and tasks.
Character development
While we do place a strong emphasis on what really matters – the rigorous academic program – we also pay special attention to the social-emotional needs of the students in our care. A formal character development program using the acclaimed Second Steps framework has been embedded into the daily life of all students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade 8 to help prepare them to become productive, caring, and creative global citizens. This character development program aims to promote positive behavior, global awareness, tolerance of others, and above all else, kindness and empathy.
Real world learning
Unique to XCL American Academy, PioneerTown is a program that allows students to learn about practical real-world topics, such as civics, economics, business, marketing, communication, and commercial law. The goal of the program is to develop and sustain a Pioneer Town where students can become entrepreneurs and/or civic leaders, and with the guidance of teachers, can create, develop, lead and manage businesses, civic agencies, or even an entire town.
Personalized learning
In addition to ensuring that each child learns important academic fundamentals, we focus our attention on helping students find their passion, master the necessary skills and knowledge they need to be independent learners, and make choices that are right for them – such as choosing which academic pathway best suits their future goals and dreams. Aside from having highly trained teachers to facilitate this, we will be using a tool, IXL, that provides content and insights to enable our students to learn at their own pace, tailored to every student.
Seamless transition to High School
Upon graduating from XCL American Academy, our students will be well prepared for academic success in high school, whether they choose to continue their American curriculum studies (the Advanced Placement (AP) examination programs), the International Baccalaureate (IB) program of studies, or a WASC accredited High School Diploma program.
Regardless of chosen pathway, all XAA students will be given priority placement in our co-located neighbor school, XCL World Academy (XWA). We ensure a seamless transition to XWA without needing to go through the application process again.
What do we offer?
Pillars of The Curriculum
Balanced Approach to Literacy
Balanced literacy is about balancing explicit language instruction with independent learning and language exploration. It aims to strike a balance between both whole language and phonics when learning to read. The strongest elements of each are incorporated into a literacy program that aims to guide students toward proficient and lifelong reading. A typical balanced literacy framework consists of five components including read aloud, guided reading, shared reading, independent reading, and word study.
Monitor Student Growth and Progress
MAP testing twice per school year for students between Grades 2 to 8 will be performed to monitor student growth. The results of which will be communicated to parents and used to determine educational approaches for each individual. The AIMS Web Student Monitoring System provides a detailed scale of current and projected progress based on MAP test results and data provided by teachers.
Science
Discovery Works Science K-12 Programming: Hands On as well as Digital discovery lessons. www.discoveryeducation.com
Coding
We will be introducing Coding early in the primary years, using the MIT Scratch program. The goal for our coding classes and offerings is simply articulated on the MIT website, “When people learn to code in Scratch, they learn important strategies for solving problems, designing projects, and communicating ideas.”
Coding will be a priority for all our students at XAA.
